S. Carey – Fool’s Gold

Sticking to his signature hypnagogic sound, S. Carey is preparing to release his third full-length album, Hundred Acres. Prior to its scheduled debut of February 23, the Eau Claire-based musician has decided to give us a taste of what’s to come. “Fool’s Gold” sports an unprecedented raw confidence. Compressed reverb from an assortment of acoustic guitars sputter and pang ever so gently. S. Carey’s voice is central yet tempered. Is it folktronica or just a highly produced singer-songwriter? I suppose that’s up to you. Check out his Bandcamp to listen in.

Holy Motors – Honeymooning

Holy Motors, out of the Estonian capital city of Tallinn, stream stark Mazzy Star-like in aesthetic new track “Honeymooning”. With an emphasis on space in the arrangement, “Honeymooning” takes that reverb-heavy deep in the p.a. vocal style perfect by Mazzy or Chris Izaak, and more recently The xx, and casts a darker (slightly menacing) thematic tone. Holy Motors’ debut LP Slow Sundown is out February 9th.

Solstis – Take Me (Feat. Ally Ahern)

It’s nice when a song not only has great production, but an even greater message. “Take Me” (Feat. Ally Ahern) by Solstis is definitely one of those tracks. If you’re not familiar with these guys, they won the Discovery Project for Electric Forest in 2015 with their track “Forever In Silence.” I’m predicting big things for these Chicago natives, keep your eye out for them in the future.

SiR – Something Foreign (Feat. ScHoolboy Q)

TDE’s next man up is SiR on the ScHoolboy Q featuring “Something Foreign”. Set to a Saxon-produced instrumental driven by jazz-referencing piano chords and rhythm structures, “Something Foreign” is a subtle standout.

KWAYE – Lost in My Boots

Mind of a Genius artist KWAYE nimbly channels the sound of multiple eras of R&B to a compact modernly arranged new track “Lost in My Boots”. A percussive main guitar, choral-reminiscent harmonies at the track’s most key dynamic points, and a cool neatly syncopated bassline frame up one of R&B (and indie music’s) best tracks of 2017.

VTCN Radio – Mydriase

After more than a year of silence, the French duo VTCN Radio finally released their debut album, Mydraise. It’s mood is mysterious and confidential, but it nonetheless delivers. I personally like how it’s not so in your face with an intense melody and love the chilled-out vibe. If you like downtempo electronic and dubstep, you’ll enjoy these slow, hypnotic tunes. Stream the title track below.

Premiere: Koalas – Two Loves

The impeccable synth-pop of “Two Loves” is new from Manchester UK duo Koalas. Propelled from its start position by peppy minor chord synth stabs, a percussive main vocal melody and a kinetic rhythm track, “Two Loves” is magnetic from the off.

Koalas’ Samuel Jones adds about the track’s genesis and inspiration, ““We wanted the song to act like a modern Eurythmics’ Sweet Dreams but written from a more positive perspective. I like the idea of a song alluding to themes around human love and kink but without ever being too obvious or explicit, demanding an emotional response and not just physical. Musically the track is a bit of a ride with stark contrasts in dynamics and density between the different sections of the song. It’s a favourite for us to play live as there’s probably the most room in this tune to go off map. ”

“Two Loves” is a component part of a new AA single from Koalas (with “Lover”) for label Low Four. Stream the B3SCI Premiere of “Two Loves” below.
