Field of Wolves – Don’t Explain

field-of-wolves

Downtempo syncopation and a loose flowing guitar progression frame the soulful jazz-influenced vocal featured on “Don’t Explain”. Field of Wolves is the new project fronted by London-based Aussie-born singer Holly Bestic, who has no doubt done her history-of-soulful-music homework. There’s so many neat diverse textures and layers to sample here. It’s trip-hop, it’s chill, and it jams, and we’ve got our replay set for “Don’t Explain” this Sunday.

Kindness – Gee Up

kindness

b3sci, The James Brown rating scale. It’s not just a way for us to look awesome as we “rate” shit. A lot of times when we’re looking at a track, deciding whether or not to feature it or toss it, we’ll try to mind meld with our patron saint James Brown and ask him (ourselves), “Would JB be into this track? Would he like it? Would it make him “feel good” to listen to?” (seriously, you can’t wrong with this litmus test, try it.) That said, we’re about 110% sure James Brown would go to town on this funky-as-fuck Kindness shit. Spin it.

Kofi Black – I Love You Crazy (Feat. Raekwon)

kofiblack

R&B newcomer Kofi Black gets a co-sign here from the Chef on new track “I Love You Crazy”. From its deep on-the-ones piano tones to its just-heavy-enough for radio claps on the twos, “ILYC” has heavy rotation on hot R&B radio written all over it. Sandwiched between that hour’s fourth of spin of “Rack City” and third of “The Motto”, “I Love You Crazy” should play down just fine.

Miguel – Adorn

miguel

Our dude Miguel Jontel returns with his latest single and vid for “Adorn”. The track borrows a bit, stylistically and rhythmically from Marvin Gaye, specifically “Sexual Healing”. That’s cool. But, Miguel, dude, lets talk about that haircut! We love The Weeknd too but the “Tesfaye fade” is not yr look, champ. Spin “Adorn” below.

The set features 36 prime outtakes and rarities, including appearances from Slick Rick, Roy Ayers & Cee-Lo Green. Our favorite from the mix, which you can sample below, is the original version of The Roots hit “Break You Off” which featured an in-his-prime D’Angelo on the hook (Musiq Soulchild appeared on the final mix).

Seasfire – Falling

seasfire

Bristol’s answer to current North American trends in R&B, Seasfire skillifully marry, not only that sound, but pop, big guitar British indie, and quiet storm among others. The cinematic, cascading “Falling” is a big track from a band that certainly now have our attention. Familiarize yourself below.

THROWBACK: The Reflections – (Just Like) Romeo and Juliet

By Chris Gedos

the-reflections-just-like-romeo-and-juliet

O.k. so this one’s slightly obvious given its sporadic rotation on OBG / Sirius 60’s radio, but The Reflections’ one hit wonder, “(Just Like) Romeo and Juliet”, occupies a unique place in Detroit music history. Originally released by Golden World Records, the song climbed to #6 during the week of May 30th, 1964, one of the greatest in the history of pop music (the top three that week included “Love Me Do”, “Chapel of Love”, and “My Guy”). “(Just Like) Romeo and Juliet” was one of Golden World’s centerpieces when they were acquired by Motown in 1966 and became the “Studio 2” to Hitsville’s “Studio 1”. Had it not been released during such a contentious week, The Reflections’ would’ve been a top three wonder. Only the thin production keeps it from approaching perfection. #allrightnowimspeculating

Saskatchewan – The Morning (The Weeknd)

By Jon Herriot

saskatchewan

If anyone was to cover Canadian R&B sensation The Weeknd, why not a band named after a province in the same country? Saskatchewan covers this track well, keeping the same dreamy vibes we are used to with The Weeknd tracks. What started as a suggestion from a friend has turned into a cover that will surely garner these guys some attention.
