The Temper Trap – Stay (U2 cover)

temper-trap-u2-stay

The Temper Trap bring the Zooropa standard into their framework for a moment, while covering of a song, that unlike covering just any great song, has featured Bono’s voice. Kudos adaptation.

RAVE’S FAVES! The Envy Corps – Ms. Hospital Corners

Contributed by Bruce Rave

the-envy-corps

If you are longing for some fresh Muse, this band by way of Iowa just might help you through the drought. The Envy Corp. definitely have that vibe with some Radiohead mixed in. They are a complex band with depth that requires some attention, and the groove will really begin to stick with you about halfway through the song. A couple of listens have worked for me. Think Muse with a groove on “Ms. Hospital Corners”.

Metric – Youth Without Youth

Contributed by Erin Shay

metric

Metric hits it loud with their newly released single from their up and coming album Synthetica, officially out in June. Youth Without Youth is rowdy, large and totally in charge. This kick ass song is a roaring expression of youthful angst with all the carefree sensibility of seventies sleaze. Huh?! You will have to take our word for it. Turn that hell raiser up and go wild!

YUCK – Chew

Contributed by Erin Shay

yuck-chew

UK-based foursome Yuck showcased their 2011 debut self-titled album and new single “Chew” during a relaxed late afternoon set at Coachella a few weeks back. The track comes from the band’s forthcoming (little known-about) release and is booming and outrageous. Definitely a good sign on the horizon for the endearing young band.

In general, Yuck are an extremely likable 90’s musical omelet with a drawn out psychedelic vibe and just the right amount of raucousness, distortion and understated enthusiasm to remind one of the Pumpkins, Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr. These cats are definitely worth checking out for their flavored, playful lyrics, spaced out lulls and shrieking guitars. The group are also known for a compelling aesthetic and extremely groovy album art, compliments of vocalist Daniel Blumberg.

The Ruminaters – Timmy

ruminaters

Along with quite a few other things, The Ruminaters bring a little of that Strokes friendly swing back to garage rock with “Timmy”. The young four piece out of Sydney definitely know their way around some raucous. Grunge-tim-tim#TIMMMAYY

Tom Vek – You’ll Stay

Contributed by Nathan Hetherington

tom-vek

So Tom Vek’s new video (below) takes us on an emotional journey through love and betray, all while taking in a total of 17 wheelies on a remote controlled monster truck! You’ll stay is actually another top quality tune from Vek, so if a few easy low budget videos means we don’t have to wait 5 years for another album then we’re all all for it. (Truck not listed on eBay yet, which is a shame)

Hanni El Khatib @ Brighton Music Hall, Boston 04/27/12

khatib21

khatib11

Hanni El Khatib delivered a no bullshit survey of American rock history Friday at Boston’s Brighton Music Hall. To riffs first questions asked later blues to the summery sheen of 50’s-inspired doo-wop, El Khatib and his assembled backing players, drummer Nicky Fleming-Yaryan and multi-instrumentalist Hayden Tobin adeptly traversed a diverse 60 minute span.

Highlights from the set included the brooding, punchy “Garbage City” and the brustling “Come Alive”. However, Khatib’s superb playing (dude is a beast with the solo skill) and intense quality of performance (Hanni don’t hurt us!) is what stood out most. That, and a shake-you-to-your-insides cover of Funkadelic’s “I Got a Thing”. (Seriously, by the end of the song the bass was beginning to “smoothie-fy” my internal organs).

Hanni means it. Every bit of his band’s hour long set felt real. It’s kind of a hackneyed sort of notion. “The performer was real”. “He delivered an intense set”. Every great, even OK, live performer certainly means it, they mean for something in performance, but with El Khatib you could feel something very special in the type of urgency evident in his set. He has to do this.

Look out for Hanni’s b3sci-recommended debut from last year, “Will the Guns Come Out?” and be sure to make like us and catch his A+ live show when he hits your city.

Fossil Collective – The Power of Love (Frankie Goes To Hollywood Cover)

fossil-collective

Fossil Collective put a heartfelt strum on the former UK chart topper from (near) decades back. “The Power of Love” has a timeless tune to it, the song seeps a pensive and poetic lyric which, at the very least, can make almost anybody contemplate the power of love. It’s beautiful. Check it out.

Rah Rah – Little Poems

Contributed by Jon Herriot

rah-rah-little-poems

Rah Rah has been pretty quiet lately, but they are back with a new single called “Little Poems”. Their headman Marshall Burns has got this endearing Neil-Young thing going on, which wins you over right away. Their multi-talented drummer Erin Passmore has one heck of a voice, which gives a neat compliment to Marshall’s style. Marshall and Erin have been playing together for the better part of a decade, and the rest of the band is full of indie rock talent. I had them play in my living room last fall, and it was a blast. We are big on Rah Rah up here in Regina, Canada. Their third full-length, The Poet’s Dead is coming out this fall. Some new North American tour dates are up, including a stop at NXNE in Toronto this June.
