RAVE’S FAVE! The Walkmen – Heartbreaker

The Walkmen have delivered Heaven, an album that will probably land on my year-end list. The title track is the current single, but “Heartbreaker” is my personal fave. Check it out below, and be sure to catch them on tour. A little small world note is that my eventual adventures with B3Sci began at a Walkmen SXSW gig in ’05. Mike of B3Sci and I were in line next to each other and started chatting. The rest is history. – By Bruce Rave

Wild Nothing – Shadow

Here’s some new “sensitive guy” rock from one of the best arbiters of that style Virginia artist Jack Tatum a/k/a Wild Nothing. “Shadow” excerpted from Tatum’s Aug 28 due LP Nocturne. If you’re into more uptempo rock-oriented dreamy textures “Shadow” should do you quite fine.

Zebra Tracks – We Found A Reason to Live and We Called It God

Zebra Tracks make something fierce with face ripping rock that would probably be our best friend too if we were living through the turmoil of life in Greece nowadays. “We Found A Reason…” is something poetic to a decades (ages) old type statement.

The Fresh & Onlys – Yes or No

The awesome Fresh & Onlys are back (it’s like they never went away right?). This go ’round the California band are prepping LP Long Slow Dance for a September release and the neatly melodic “Yes or No” is to be the new album’s lead single. Have a preview below.

Fly Points – Forget

The first single has hit the internet from indie-rockers Fly Points from Regina, Canada. This tune has some great melodies and it takes you on quite the journey in a quick four minutes. The vocals also really stand out for me, they come from Danny Goertz who has put a successful singer-songwriter project on hold to focus on Fly Points. So far, they have played nothing but sold out shows in their home town and they have built quite a bit of hype around themselves. They have been recording their first album for the last few months, and we are excited to see what else they have for us. – By Jon Herriot

Fast Years – Women [EP]

Brooklyn rockers Fast Years will release their debut EP Women on June 25. The EP starts out on a tear with the guitar-driven “Young Heart” which certainly packs a jangly punch. Women then segways nicely into the incredibly hooky surf tune, “Let Me Try”. Things mellow out on the next few tracks giving the album a nice flavor. “Fall For Me” is an exceedingly dynamic, but pleasantly tight track where nothing is wasted. The melodies are woven masterfully with a true knack for Pop – something that Fast Years seem to do effortlessly. “Like It Or Not” is more nostalgic and without doubt leaves me with a John Frusciante sort of feel (this song is really a delight). The album takes another turn with “Stolen Love”, which delivers a vibrant and energetic track. The closing number, “Happy Hour” offers up some healthy refrains and more of those guitar sounds that are so distinctive to Fast Years. Highly relatable lyrics is another quality that makes this EP ever more relevant and significant to the listener – spurring periods of pondering, reflection, and maybe even preparation for some looming event that might just be meandering beyond your awareness. – By Trevor Meyer

Two Wounded Birds – If Only We Remain

“If Only We Remain” is the second single from Two wounded Birds’ forthcoming self-titled and debut album. The track showcases the quartet’s unmistakable knack for brit jangle (that you know we love) and appreciation for classic American pop. The video for the song was premiered this morning via FILTER. Grab the album June 26th.

RAVE’S FAVE! The Hives – Come On!

By Bruce Rave

The Hives blew their Coachella crowd away this year, and their Lex Hives album will drop on Tuesday. I don’t think it will go down as their best, but it starts out with 69 seconds of hotness. Come on and check out “Come On!”

Capitol 6 – Cold Ride

“Cold Ride” is the new single from fab five outfit Capitol 6 by way of Vancouver. The track harkens back to psych-pop and all of it’s glory with a tambourine friendly A/B structure and refrain hook worthy of any record collection.

Spiritualized / Nikki Lane Live @ The Wiltern 5-22-12

Nikki Lane graced the stage at The Wiltern in Los Angeles on Tuesday night while opening for headlining act Spiritualized. The match was complimentary. For one, like the bluesy and soulful veins that flow through Spiritualized, Nikki Lane too has an appreciation for classic, early rock and roll music, so early that it’s more country and bluegrass influenced. The Nashville singer-songwriter, who had been performing solo for most of the tour, had pleasure of pedal steel and guitar accompaniment that night.

In this time, of what feels like, Zooey Deschanel mania, how could Nikki Lane not translate to the masses? Her Americana blend has a country twee flavor that’s as classic as apple pie, early Jenny Lewis and, still at moments, is as much Elvis Presley as anything (#TLC baby). For example, the way that Lane chooses to keep the botched guitar lick on her recording of “Thousand Dollar Hound” because (we’d like to think) it has the right feel (which it totally does). Still there seems a coincidental appreciation of a contemporary flare, like something musical which writers like brit pop-father Noel Gallagher and even someone ilke Willie Mason might relate. In between tracks like “Lies” and “Sleep For You” Nikki proclaimed that she ‘fucking loves Los Angeles’. Feelings seemed mutual.

The stage curtain was set before Spiritualized took stage. Hanging on the curtain to the 80+ year old art deco Wiltern Theater was an aptly sponsored advert for snacks in the lobby. That’s right, this was no ordinary rock show, this was an event. The house lights went dark and the curtain rose to Spiritualized ripping into “Hey Jane” from their most recent Sweet Heart Sweet Light LP release. It was pretty epic stuff.

Noteworthy things about Spiritualized include their volume threshold. At even the lowest of volumes Spiritualized seem able to ringingout something on a guitar, but unlike many of their brit-guitar drenched peers, Spiritualized have achieved a savvy and certain level of critical success. Perhaps it’s because of their ability to work outside a box of repressed experimentation. That combined with an occasional freeform song structure which can come off as conductorial at times. Call it whatever you like but Spiritualized are musicians before they are rock stars. They finesse pentatonics with a variety of musical styles and tempos, and their jams can be something to watch.

Spiritualized performs in a half circle arrangement on stage. Almost like they’d prefer to be submerged in each others sound more than anything having to do with putting on ‘a show’. The near capacity venue (stiff competition that night from Lianne La Havas, Beck and more) absorbed every swell from a band who’s experiencing something new (live, recording, collaboration, etc) from the band at times can feel like discovering a rarely seen jungle flower (or something like that). Standouts from the set like “Soul On Fire” served a perfect fix. As did the classic refrain in “Ladies and Gents..”.

RAVE’S FAVE: Little Barrie – Surf Hell

By Bruce Rave

This is a UK 3-piece fronted by the killer guitar player Barrie, who just likes to use his first name. They combine 60′s influenced garage and blues and have a Rolling Stones feel. There’s a line on the band’s site that Barrie’s guitar sounds like “Dwayne Eddy with a distortion pedal”. Their sound is far more than that, but that vibe definitely applies to “Surf Hell”. They played in LA this past Thursday and nailed it despite having just arrived from London that afternoon. They will play dates in Seattle, Portland, Oakland, and San Diego this coming week before heading back to the UK.
