Bruce Rave Recaps The Great Escape

greatescape

B3’s Bruce Rave headed Brighton earlier this month to take in UK breaking artist festival The Great Escape. Sample below Bruce’s notes on some selected bands to keep tabs on the in nearest future.

bohicas

The Bohicas are blistering live with huge guitar hooks.

dutchuncles

Dutch Uncles are very precise with some songs hookier than others.

aquilo

Aquilo have immense talent and played a pretty set that endured sound problems.

PINS

The girl band Pins reminds many of Best Coast (and they’ve toured together), but they do what they do well with good songs and tight playing.

boxedin

Boxed In is a band that was unfamiliar to me and they nicely blend electro and rock.

hippocampus

Hippo Campus had only played live in Minnesota until this March, and this UK gig impressed the crowd.

rayboy

Rat Boy attracted a bevy of high-end industry types. He’s considered hip hop but to me his high energy set was much more on the rock side.

slaves

Slaves was one of the most buzzed bands. If you like it hard, heavy, and humorous with some punk anger mixed in, this set would have been right up your alley.

rhodes

On the other hand, Rhodes was equally effective in a soft and sweet way.

springking2

Spring King are a fun guitar band that plays fast with melody.

blossoms

Blossoms matched their buzz with a good set in the very difficult Green Door Store venue.

maccabees

The surprise closing set was by Maccabees. This was my first experience where most people in the hall were fans, since UK industry peeps know this band real well. While staid reactions were the norm, this set resulted in animated fans singing along.

Lots of bands I would have liked to see, time permitting, including The Vaccines, Alabama Shakes, Bully and The Strypes.

Check out Bruce’s “Go Deep” show on Fridays 1-3 pm Pacific, 4-6 pm Eastern, 9-11pm GMT. Also listen to past shows at Bruce’s blog and follow Bruce on Twitter.

Made In Heights – Pop It In 2

madeinheights

Male-female artist duo Made in Heights, who recently hit B3SCI pages for their sultry superbly animated track “Slow Burn”, continue to excel at making catchy atmospheric electro-pop on their gorgeous flippant-vocaled synth-stylized new track “Pop It In 2”; which creatively combines the duo’s artistic penchant for mixing stellar vocals (both members sing) and a big-beat enhanced pop sound. Fresh fun-loving dance-based pop track “Pop It In 2” is off the recently released Made In Heights’ full-length album Without My Enemy What Would I Do. Reviewed by Erin Shay

Gelka – Million Nights (Synkro Remix)

synkro

Synkro is the UK electronic producer who we featured back in April for his darkly dramatic Lyves collaboration “Body Close”. On his newest release “Million Nights” (which is a remix of the Phoenix Pearl-vocaled track from Hungarian electronic duo Gelka), Synkro fashions a brilliant down-tempo weave of hazy tranced-out male vocals, delicate trap-based beats and a memorizing deep-bass under-layer atmospheric vibe that stays true to his soulful, delicately emotive production style and signature subtle instrumental verve. Synkro’s new beautiful remix of “Million Nights” is available now on Gelka’s “Million Nights” EP which features remixes of the same track from the perspective of other artists. Check it out. Drake – On a Wave (Feat. Tinashe)

drake

The genre of “Drake leak” is at a volume peak right now as the ramp up to Aubrey’s Views From the 6 LP is in full motion. The Tinashe-assisted “On a Wave” follows Beyonce-collab “Can I” in a simiarly styled latter-days “40” minimalist feel. A simple melange of piano and a four bar synth figure carry much of the track’s instrumental weight while D & T rhyme poetic on the subject “my schedule is busy”. “On a Wave” is great and probably our favorite of the post-Nothing Was the Same Drake tracks. If you’re not into Drake, we can’t be friends.

Born in Devon UK but raised in Australia, Emmi, already a known commodity within the industry after working on the writing of tracks for Little Nikki and Leona Lewis makes her online debut with first original track “My Kinda Swag”. Operating in channel firmly anchored to 90’s R&B (think Aaliyah and Mary J. Blige), Emmi ably adds a modern and personal spin on that sound with the fresh “My Kinda Swag”.

Kartell – Attracted

kartell

Tours-born Paris-based house producer Kartell is best known for his stylish nu-disco/R&B production accents, steadfast efforts to revitalize the French Touch electronica scene and for his 2014 smash hit remix of Karma Kid’s exceptional track “Like I’m on Fire”. Man of Moon – The Road

manofmoon

Scottish band Man of Moon will release “The Road” through UK label Melodic Records on July 17. “The Road” as a track is simply excellent where percussive but economical muted guitars create the ballast for a controlled chaos of riffing and hypnotic groove in constant motion. Well done.
