REVIEW: Andy Kaufman – Andy And His Grandmother [LP]

Andy Kaufman

Review by Chris Gedos

Andy And His Grandmother, the looong-overdue first LP from late great comic/actor/humanoid Andy Kaufman, is a powerful intellectual document for anyone interested in the creative process. For Kaufman, whose performance was so forward thinking that it still makes the avant-garde look passé, the album reinforces that for Kaufman’s life and art were the same, that the constantly shifting organism of existence provides for the most telling glimpses into human psychology. So for Andy, what better way to preserve these transcendent moments than to keep a micro-tape recorder running surreptitiously? Indeed, the great writers don’t create, they draw from existence. And as much as Andy chose to display his extraterrestrial likeness (most famously as Lakta Gravas on Taxi, an offshoot of his foreign man routine on SNL, who first premiered on the show’s fourth episode in 1975), there’s this infatuation with the kaleidoscope of the human palette omnipresent within Kaufman’s work.

One such track off the LP, “Slice of Life”, Kaufman is at his most confident: after sex with his girlfriend. After he gets past the pretense of “make believe that it’s not on”, referring to the recorder, the first line of the “performance” (that is, documented life without script or pretense), he challenges his “audience” (in this case, his girlfriend) with “it didn’t look to me like you were enjoying it that much.” A hilarious and universal motif, but in the context of reality it gains a painful beauty. He continues: “it looked like you were just lying there and like you wanted it to be over soon.” He continues into the topic of marriage, and when his girlfriend says she doesn’t like to joke about marriage, the shock of silence is detectable in Kaufman’s absence.

Produced, edited and sparingly narrated by Vernon Chatman (voice of South Park’s Towelie and co-creator of Wonder Showzen), Andy And His Grandmother has been pared down from 82 hours of material. Given the album’s final track, “I Want Those Tapes” which features Andy’s now-ex telling him to ‘fuck-off’, I’m afraid there’s even more unreleased hours devoted to Andy’s sociopathy, contemplating his death and future immortality.

Andy And His Grandmother is out this Tuesday, July 16th, via Drag City records. An essential listen for both fans of Kaufman’s genius and critics of the celebrity age, which Kaufman’s work foresaw.

Ben Khan – Drive (Part 1)

ben khan

We’ve been spinning “Drive (Part 1)” from 20 year old London based producer Ben Khan and processing what exactly to make of such a menacing and anomalous debut? What’s indisputable is Khan’s inclination to play by his own rules. Dark guitars, synth tones, vocal melodies and pulsing rhythms seem to maneuver effortlessly between the experimental pop worlds of projects like Massive Attack and TV On The Radio. We predict that Ben Khan will be one to keep an eye on, and we can’t wait to hear more. Sample why below.

Tin Types – Torcchio

tin types final

Tin Types, a newish band out of one of our adopted home hoods San Francisco, release beautifully atmospheric and pleasantly non-dense track “Torcchio”. Sort of loose in arrangement like a great 2013 indie version of an extended late 70’s R&B track (totally thinking of Latimore here lol), one “Torcchio”s really rewarding points (and there’s many) is that the track is set up in a way (ballasted nicely by some simple but very effective pulses of rhythm) where the guitar on the track and the vocals are able to actually breathe within the song’s broader context creating a hypnotic (powerful, refreshing) overall sense to the track. We love it.

Justin Timberlake – Take Back the Night

Justin Timberlake - Take Back the Night

Timberlake is back (again) w/ the lead single from his upcoming 20/20 Experience sequel and this time he’s brought along Michael Jackson. “Take Back the Night” is an Off the Wall-era Michael pastiche for sure but it is a very good pastiche and if it means it’ll grab away any playlist slots from that awful new Bruno Mars “Treasure” song, all the better.

Banks – Warm Water (Snakehips Remix)

snakehips edit

The mighty Snakehips outfits Banks’ “Warm Water” in an appropriately “jacuzzi temperatures” bath of fresh melodic beats and drenched in that glittering light you see on the ocean at twilight synth that has become the UK DJ’s trademark. Ace and a half.

Cocovan – Mascara

cocovan

“Mascara” is the expertly layeyed, perfectly constructed and conceived latest bit of pop chanteuse-ry from Parisian singer Cococvan. Revealing cool and interesting (& genre-crossing) new bits and attributes with each repeat listen (like that neat demon dude voice at the close of each chorus or the killer, totally out of nowhere, momentum-pushing new chord progression in the bridge (whoa!)), “Mascara”, in addition to being great, has a rather large bit of replayability in its tank too. Give “Mascara” your ears with the appropriate buttons below.

Dan Croll – In/Out

Dan Croll

Recalling now the heady days of August, 2012 when a cool blog called blahblahblahscience.com premiered the debut track from a then unknown artist out of Liverpool called Dan Croll. Nearly a year & a couple of hit singles later (I’ll never forget losing my mind in the car when I heard “From Nowhere” on the radio here in SF), the Croll man is back with a new deal on a Universal imprint, mentions in The Guardian, etc etc. Mr. Croll’s first major release is the once-again-very-strong wide net casted wordly synth pop of “In/Out”.

Dominic Smith – No Pretend (Preview/Edit)

Dominic Smith

Ah yes, lush exotic vibed down house. Give us a hushed four on the floor, some subtle female vocals & a few syncopated acoustic guitar strums and it’s pretty much b3 house paradise. So we’re gonna get on to that while you spin the track and read the following; “No Pretend” is previewed here from Dublin-based producer Dominic Smith’s upcoming “What It Is What” EP out July 15th on Vision Collective.

Ta-ku & Raashan Ahmad – Lean Left

Ta-ku & Raashan Ahmad

Ta-Ku & Rashaan Ahmad’s 2011-recorded (!) album gets its proper release this week thanks to the cool brahs at Jakarta Records. The gloomy soul-flavoring (always a b3 fave!) of “Lean Left” is our pick from the record’s sixteen strong tracks. You check out a full sample of the LP on soundcloud.
