Tashaki Miyaki – If Not For You (Bob Dylan)

By Stephen Dobrinich

tashakimiyaki2

I was hooked on ‘If Not For You’ from the outset and this lo-fi version of a great Dylan track definitely delivers. Tashaki Miyaki is an LA based duo which between the echoing vocals and rhythmic guitar brings to mind The Velvet Underground and the likes of other shoegazing noise rock. If you happen to be at SXSW make sure to check them out at Latitude 30 Friday night at 8pm.

Of Montreal – Feminine Effects

By Stephen Dobrinich

ofmontreal

Here’s a nice offering from the psychedelic pop group, Of Montreal. ‘Feminine Effects’ has a chilled out vibe and a great hook that’s got me playing it on repeat. This comes as a part of the group’s contribution to a forthcoming split single with Deerhoof set to be released on Record Store Day. Make sure you check it out.

Miike Snow – Bavarian (Say You Will)

miikesnow2

The mighty Miike took to Annie Mac’s Radio 1 show last night to debut “Bavarian”, the third single from the band’s due March 26 LP Happy to You. One of the band’s more playful whimsical moments, “Bavarian” marches along (the band got the Swedish military drum corps to perform on the track) most of its 4 minutes duration; with punches of electronic pulse distributed throughout the give the song more of a Miike Snow sound. “Bavarian” wins on melody, though, with a particularly sharp chorus hook. Give it a spin below.

Careful Hands – Such Of You

By Jon Herriot

carefulhands

This music comes from a solo project called Careful Hands out of Regina, Canada. Pertinent lyrics, smooth vocals, and great harmonica to accompany the guitar. I’ve seen Brennon play in some intimate living room settings, and it is even better. In a year when Bon Iver is getting some overdue recognition, this music has a real place in our hearts and our playlists. Careful Hands’ debut LP Become Another Person is due next month.

Usher – Climax (Prod. Diplo)

usher

We couldn’t be more in love with this song right now (knocks so soft). Usher opened up the purse and dropped a little of that Bieber $$$$ on a new vid which you can watch below. If b3sci has a wish for 2012, it’s for these two to do a whole album. An Usher x Diplo album could/would be a game changer not only for both artists but for the whole music game. MAKE IT HAPPEN GUYS. March 2012, month of the soft heater. Go and get it!

Poor Moon – Illusion

By Trevor Meyer

poormoon

Poor Moon brings Christian Wargo and Casey Wescott (Fleet Foxes, Crystal Skulls) together with Ian and Peter Murray (The Christmas Cards), creating a powerhouse quartet. This is quasi-reminiscent of Fleet Foxes, but Poor Moon offer up desirable, cleverly-written melodies that will alleviate all of your headaches better than most modern medicine. “Illusion” is the title track from the band’s forthcoming EP, out March 26th.

RAVE’S FAVES: Fun. – Be Calm

By Bruce Rave

fun

A group of us heard Fun’s “We Are Young” for the first time together, and the track got a unanimous thumbs-up. The group and their fans are having so much fun that the single sits at #2 on the national alternative airplay charts. The good news is that there’s more to their album than just the hit. “Be Calm” sounds like Queen meeting Mika and The Sparks. The song will probably calm you, and will hopefully make you feel good. Fun is a good name for these guys.

The Plastic Traps – Corridor

By Trevor Meyer

theplastictraps

Philadelphia two-piece, The Plastic Traps, dropped their debut album, ‘Find A Home’ in early February, 2012. Reverb-heavy, guitar-driven, and melodically haunting, you’ve got to give it up for these guys. I’m a softy for two-piece bands, but really these guys are excellent. Give “Corridor” a spin below and also make sure to check out their other material; “Thinking of Something” is my personal favorite. They’ve got a small resemblance to My Morning Jacket, which is never a bad thing.
