J. Cole – Bring ‘Em In

template-2panel revised [Converted]

Round 2 of J. Cole’s “Any Given Sunday” EP series yields “Bring ‘Em In”. A track as Cole World explains was “Made this in ATL during the “single hunt” phase. Even though it wasn’t a single and won’t make the album, I love this shit!”. Yeah, we love this shit too.

Bombay Bicycle Club – How Can You Swallow So Much Sleep

Bombay Bicycle Club

“How Can You Swallow So Much Sleep” is the lead track off Bombay Bicycle Club’s anticipated A Different Kind of Fix LP. As with “Shuffle”, there seems a progression in sound not only for the band but one that’s bridging popular music. The song’s early soundtrack visibility can serve as an indication that this song has some light to shine, as we can only hope for the rest of A Different Kind of Fix.

Beady Eye – Blue Moon

blue-moon-beady-eye

Laid back is how we like our Fridays. Take Beady Eye’s cover of “Blue Moon” for example. Liam’s croon is gentle as ever, with the band almost framed in a world that John Lennon could have had for “Free As A Bird”. Not to make the cliche but rather to point out how even Lennon must have been inspired by the standard ballad made famous by both of John and Liam’s (and everyone’s) mentor ‘The King’. Either way, this cover is mint.

Just because we heard this and had to ask the entire blogosphere what the fuck this is. What the fuck is this? Besides a trip. We quote the band, “have a nice dance with Satan”.

RAVE’S FAVE: Teddybears – Rocket Science (feat. Eve)

teddybears2

Before I again go with the same artist(s) two weeks running, we might see The XX or Mumford & Sons record a metal song. After loving three TB’s tracks including last week’s “Crystal Meth Christian”, I decided to check out the rest of their album. The huge low-end hook in “Rocket Scientist” has addicted me and hopefully will do the same for you. The whole song rocks in a very electro sort of way. Contributed by Bruce Rave

Kingdom – Take Me (Feat. Naomi Allen)

How do I fresh? So what’s not to love about “Take Me” by the Kingdom dude? A neatly-packed electrotheque beat supports the track framed by ligher-than-air vox courtesy of Electrik Red’s Naomi Allen. Bounce to it.

Jhene Aiko – Sailing (Feat. Kanye West)

jheneaiko

I remember giving R&B songstress Jhene Aiko a few spins recently around when her Sailing Souls mixtape dropped. Somehow I missed this dope laidback jam with a Kanye feature. Early in the aughts, Jhene had, for lack of a better description, a tight relationship with TRL favs B2K, (wrote a bunch of tracks, sang on their records, had a baby by Omarion’s brother). Well, girl is back and she’s re-emerged here on “Sailing” and sounds great. Give this sultry heater a spin and see what you think.

The Californian – Everybody Loves You

californian2

Their name says a lot but not everything. Los Angeles collective The Californian brings a welcome and fresh perspective to an oft-sound of summer. On “Everybody Loves You” qualities of surf and indie rock timelessness come in-tow with a pop song, crafted as infectious as any. It’s pretty hard to resist.

Off the heels of their recent tour with She Wants Revenge, The Californian are prepping the release of their self-titled debut album with select performances this summer including a slot at Sunset Junction street festival in Silverlake late August. We’ll be there.
